STORY at the 5th International Conference on Industrial Waste Heat Valorisation, 21-22 May 2019, Kortrijk, Belgium

Jad Al Koussa from VITO-Energyville presented STORY at this congerence by using the presentation title "H2020 STORY project- added value of storage in distribution systems: a waste wood valorization case on an industrial site"

ABSTRACT of the presentation:

H2020 STORY is a European project involving 18 partner institutions in 7 different European countries, researching new energy storage technologies and their added value to the electrical distribution systems. Among the 6 demonstrators is the case of a multi-energy grid in an industrial area in Olen, Belgium. On this site, the wood processing company Beneens produces a lot of waste wood. To valorize this waste wood, the company installed a wood fired boiler of 1.6 MW delivering heat at 150°C to an ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) that produces electricity at +/- 90 kWe. The heat from the boiler is also used for space and process heating purposes.
To increase the flexibility of the installation, a 50 m³ high temperature storage tank and a 20 m³ low temperature storage tank are installed.
To optimally control the energy system, VITO-Energyville has developed methods to accurately estimate the state of charge (SOC) of the storage unit(s). These methods rely on a combination of temperature measurements and (physical) models. This presentation will provide an overview of the project, of the installation, and will discuss the monitoring of the storage tanks and the determination methods of the state of charge.
